Waynesburg University offers a 12-credit, non-degree, post-baccalaureate Certificate in Substance Use Disorder Counseling accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). This certificate is available 100% online and can be completed in as little as two semesters. Upon completion, the Certificate counts towards the Pennsylvania Certification Board’s (PCB) Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) for individuals with a bachelor’s degree or Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) for individuals with a master’s degree.
The Certificate in Substance Use Disorder Counseling will be awarded by the University to individuals who have completed 12 credits in substance use disorder counseling. Individuals seeking a certification in substance use disorder counseling must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, and be currently employed as a counselor at an agency providing substance use disorder counseling. Individuals who have a master’s degree in counseling or a related field are also eligible to enroll in the certification program, even if they are not currently employed in the substance use disorder field.

Curriculum
CNS 527 Pharmacology of Psychoactive Substances
This course covers terminology, drug classification, physiological effects, psychological effects, withdrawal syndrome, drug interactions and treatment applications. All major categories of drugs are addressed: alcohol, depressants, cocaine and other stimulants, opiates, hallucinogens, cannabinoids, inhalants and other substances. The course also explores neurological commonalities of substance use disorders and the hypothesized role of neurotransmitters and endogenous chemicals as well as compulsive behaviors such as gambling, sexual behavior and shopping.
CNS 537 Substance Use Disorder Counseling Techniques
This course explores evaluation, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with substance use disorders. Motivational interviewing will guide strategic interventions for a variety of modes and modalities in substance use disorder counseling. Evidence-based practices, such as harm reduction, will be studied. Social justice and advocacy are emphasized as well. The course will accentuate cultural competence among substance use disorder counselors so that they may learn how to broach cultural differences to effectively work with marginalized groups.
CNS 539 Substance Use Disorders and Trauma Informed Care
This course explores the connection between trauma and substance use disorders. Students will investigate the role of adversity as etiologically relevant to the treatment of substance use disorders. Substance use will be evaluated as a misguided solution from a trauma-informed care framework. The course will examine how repeated exposure to traumatic events affects development, interpersonal relationships, and neurological functioning. Specific counseling theories and techniques for the treatment of trauma and co-occurring conditions will be presented.
CNS 558 Family Counseling for Substance Use Disorder
This course explores the theoretical underpinnings of family counseling theories as it relates to counseling families affected by substance use disorders. Topics include system theory, survival roles, transgenerational trauma, grief and loss, and adverse childhood experiences across the lifespan. Substance use disorder is recognized as a family disease requiring strategic interventions.
Cultivating Substance Use Disorder Counselors of Tomorrow Grant
The non-degree Certificate in Addiction Counseling Program at Waynesburg University was awarded a capacity building grant totaling $25,000 from the Staunton Farm Foundation in 2021.
