Waynesburg University nursing faculty partnered with the Health Assistant Program faculty at Greene County Career & Technology Center (GCCTC) to offer an engaging, hands-on learning opportunity for high school students. The collaboration brought GCCTC juniors and seniors to Waynesburg’s campus for a one-day event designed to enhance their skills and introduce them to nursing education.
Held in the University’s Nursing Simulation Lab, the experience allowed GCCTC students to practice essential healthcare skills, including administering various types of injections, drawing up and delivering insulin, proper placement of EKG leads and blood pressure monitoring. Senior nursing students enrolled in the University’s “NUR 419: Clinical Prevention and Population Health” served as mentors and educators, guiding GCCTC students through each activity.
In addition to skill-building exercises, GCCTC students participated in simulations led by both senior and junior nursing students enrolled in the University’s “NUR 305: Advanced Physical Assessment” course. These simulations included transferring patients with physical limitations, performing CPR, donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE), tying quick-release knots on restraints, and experiencing challenges associated with arthritis and visual impairments. Throughout the day, Waynesburg students continued to coach and mentor GCCTC participants, reinforcing their role as leaders and educators.
The event concluded with an interactive “Escape the Lab” quiz, which tested GCCTC students’ observational skills and attention to detail—critical competencies for any healthcare professional.
For Waynesburg nursing students, the event provided an opportunity to see themselves as nurses and recognize the expertise they have developed over their years of study. GCCTC students were given the opportunity to gain valuable insights and inspiration through the event, and a potential interest in furthering their nursing education at Waynesburg University in the future.
This collaborative effort not only strengthened the connection between the University and GCCTC but also left a positive impact on all participants, showcasing the transformative power of mentorship and hands-on learning.
