Student Perspective: Julia Corey

Junior Accounting Major

Julia Corey Mar 7, 2025

Waynesburg University was the only school I looked at and applied to while I was in high school. I toured the campus and immediately fell in love with the environment, the staff, and the community.

When I was in the fall semester of my freshman year at Waynesburg University, I was a nursing major and on the tennis team. By the time the spring semester rolled around, I was an accounting major and no longer participated in tennis. Science was never the right fit for me, and I knew I would advance farther in a number-focused major. Once I found my groove in the business department, I also joined the tennis team and found myself again.

After becoming an accounting major, my experience at Waynesburg improved immensely. I have gained so many unexpected opportunities from the staff and my fellow peers. With the help of my advisor and professor, Professor Stough, I was introduced to two internships that I applied for and got offers from both. Along with this, I was nominated to be Waynesburg University’s Student Ambassador for the PICPA. I was also recommended as a tutor for six different business classes including financial/managerial accounting, intermediate accounting I/II, business law, and economics.

I am extremely grateful for the opportunities I have had and the connections I have made once I became a part of Waynesburg University’s business department. All of the staff has always been there for me no matter when, where, or what the instance was. I believe that they have prepared me to be successful and equipped me with the skills necessary to grow in the business and accounting world.

My advice to younger students would be to take advantage of the small class sizes at Waynesburg University because it is easier to connect with professors. I believe all professors at WU want the best for their students and to help them grow not only in the university, but after graduation as well. Another piece of advice I have is to try to be involved in clubs or athletics. I have made so many friends from being a part of the tennis team on top of the friends I have made in my major. Doing both academics and athletics has also taught me how to manage my time and balance between friends, studying, and tennis practices allowing me to be equally dedicated to each.
