Getting the most out of online learning

How Online and Hybrid Classes Work

Synchronous: In synchronous classes, students to engage with class materials at the same time as their peers. Learning occurs in a face to face setting such as a classroom or on the internet through video meetings.

Asynchronous: Asynchronous classes offer learners the flexibility of engaging course materials at a time of their choosing and while meeting scheduled due dates. Students can connect with their peers and instructors on their own schedules.

Most online classes are interactive and require participation. Substantial time commitment will be required.

Is your computer ready?

Use Google Chrome as your web browser. Google Chrome is the preferred browser for Canvas.

Using your phone for class: Download the Canvas app to access Canvas while on the go. Depending on your device, not all Canvas features may be available on the app at this time. View Canvas Student mobile features by version and device.

What do I need to do to succeed?

Internet classes are challenging and should be treated as "real" courses. One way to hold yourself accountable is to set weekly goals. The calendar will also help with time management.

You must have an account to log in to Canvas.
If you are associated with an institution using Canvas and do not know your username and password, please contact your site administrator.
If you are given a join code or a secret URL to join a course, learn how to create a Canvas account.

Get organized

Navigate using Chrome and Identify software
WU Portal
Review your syllabi for key due dates
Place dates on calendar
Create a scheduling plan
Create a checklist for the work requirements
Get your texts and other required materials immediately
Create a designated workspace
Stay connected to the class and your instructor and log in frequently
