Taking Attendance in Canvas
Canvas provides a quick and easy way to take attendance in face to face courses – and it works really well on your phone! Download the Canvas Teacher App from your App Store. Enable attendance in your course
Create direct links to Canvas Content
Sharing a link to a specific page or assignment in your Canvas course is as easy as sharing any URL. Open any page in Canvas and copy the URL from the address bar. Open your email application and paste the URL into the message body. You can also create browser bookmarks for a Canvas page and save them In a bookmarks folder. Dragging the URL from the address bar to your computer or phone desktop or home screen also creates a quick method to access internal Canvas content. You may be asked to log into your account when you follow the link.
Visibility of Assignments in Canvas
It’s good practice to assign due dates to all Assignments in your course. When published, assignments appear on the Calendar (if the course is selected in the calendar) and the upcoming assignment column on the home page. Assignments also appear in chorological order on the assignments page. Without a due date, they can cause confusion, especially when appearing as “undated assignments.” To simplify the look of the gradebook, uncheck “unpublished assignments” in the View dropdown and remove all unused assignments from your course assignments page. Imported assignments need to be carefully named so as to avoid duplication of module assignments.
Remove Duplicate and Unused Assignments Before Publishing
Before publishing your course, there are several housekeeping duties to attend to. Removing duplicate and unneeded assignments, especially in instances where you have imported content from another course, will ward off potential problems and clean up your gradebook. Check your Assignments section for an Imported Assignment group. It’s good practice to carefully delete unused assignments, move assignments to their respective assignment groups, and then check that all assignment groups are weighted appropriately. These actions will help organize your Grades section and make for a better student experience.
Blueprint Courses
A blueprint course is a course in Canvas that serves as a template for other courses. The content and settings in the blueprint course can be synched with the course shell provided by the registrar. Note: Teachers cannot make associations, but can edit the blueprint course once enrolled.
The content in a Blueprint course can be pushed to multiple sections of the course, ensuring consistency for all enrolled. Updated content can be quickly disseminated to all sections. Blueprint announcements can be rapidly posted to all dependent courses and sections. For more information see the Canvas guides.
Canvas Calendar
To view courses, select "Calendar" in the global menu. The calendar in Canvas allows instructors and students to track all assignments. All of your course assignments and any events will be displayed on one calendar, which makes it easy for you to view and make updates. You can also synch your personal calendar with Canvas. To do this, locate and copy the calendar feed from Canvas and add it to your preferred calendar application.
Announcements in Canvas
Announcements allow instructors to communicate with students about course activities and other course-related topics. Announcements are designed to allow instructors to broadcast information to all students in a course. Announcements can also be set up to be delivered on a specific date. You may want to consider using audio or video to personalize your announcement.
