ENG 235.01: Faith Writing

Mar 8, 2022

Course name: ENG 235.01 Faith Writing

Instructor: Dr. Robert Randolph, Professor of English

People have many different conceptions of faith, and the books we read and discuss in this class reflect that well."

Nick Haushalter

About the course: [This course] invites students to engage with faith writings from a wide span of voices: the Psalms, Luke in Acts, Paul in Second Timothy, Hildegard of Bingen, C. S. Lewis, Jonathan Edwards, Jimmy Carter, Marilynne Robinson, Madeline L'Engle, and T. S. Eliot. Students talk about and write about these writings and may do extra credit assignments such as writing their own psalms or noting the presence of God shining through their day.

Instructor commentary: "This is an energetic course rooted in sincere student discussion (questions as well as answers) of strong writing about faith.  If it works well, it beats with the heart of the Waynesburg University mission." - Dr. Robert Randolph

Student commentary: "People have many different conceptions of faith, and the books we read and discuss in this class reflect that well. Pulling from authors ranging from Jonathan Edwards to Jimmy Carter, Faith Writing is a helpful introduction to traditions and opinions that some students may not be all that familiar with. It is good to be exposed to these even if you are deeply opposed to some of them." - Nick Haushalter, Christian mission major from State College, Pennsylvania

"I think this class is interesting because of the discussions we have in class. Professor Randolph takes the writings and turns them into deep theological discussions. It truly fascinates me how he has so much passion for faith and different styles of writing. The way he combines the passion for both topics, while providing beneficial discussion, is truly fascinating to me." - Rachel Duncan, children and youth ministries major from Uledi, Pennsylavania
