Counseling Disclosure

Waynesburg University discloses that the Master of Arts in Counseling program will fulfill state/territory educational requirements for professional licenses.

Some state licensing boards have additional requirements beyond the degree, which may include (but are not limited to): additional post-graduation examinations or experience, application and licensing fees, criminal background checks, reference checks, fingerprint submissions, etc. Continuing education may also be required for maintenance of certification/licensure. Make sure you understand and review any additional requirements prior to enrolling in any counseling program.

State licensing requirements are subject to change at the discretion of the state licensing board. The University will update this page annually, but we strongly recommend you inquire with the applicable state board to confirm your eligibility for licensure prior to enrolling in any degree program resulting in certification. For any questions regarding licensure, please contact the state/territory agency directly.

Relocation

Licensing requirements vary by state/territory and relocating could impact whether you will meet eligibility requirements for licensure. For any questions about relocation eligibility, contact the agency where you desire licensure before relocating to ensure that you will be eligible for licensure or reciprocity. If you are considering relocating, or have relocated, please complete the Student Change of Address Form and contact your academic advisor to discuss how this may impact licensure requirements.

Licensing Information

Successful completion of the Master of Arts in Counseling program meets the educational requirements to obtain certification as a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) as approved by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). This certification is applicable across states.

In order to practice independently, counselors must be licensed through the state(s) in which they are providing services. States require applicants for licensure to obtain 60 credits of graduate studies in counseling or a related field; the majority of states require the graduate program’s curriculum to be based on the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) model.
