Education majors to serve in the Bahamas

Teghan Simonton Dec 18, 2017

During Winter Break, 10 students will travel to the Bahamas to work with children in schools and orphanages. The trip, which is designed for education majors at Waynesburg University, will run from Saturday, Jan. 6 through Saturday, Jan. 13.

This year, Kylee Sargent, help desk coordinator, is one of the trip leaders. While it is her first year going on the trip, she is excited to witness the students in action.

“I’m very excited to see our education students using what they learn to serve others,” said Sargent. “This trip displays the purpose of Waynesburg University perfectly.”

Students will assist in teaching a variety of grade levels at a primary school in Nassau, Bahamas, and will also be visiting a local orphanage to work with children. Sargent said she hopes the students benefit from working with kids in an environment very different from the ones they are used to in the United States.

Students attending the trip include:

  • Abigail Bausch, sophomore early childhood education with special education major from Sunbury, Pennsylvania (Shikellamy High School)
  • Michaella Callander, junior early childhood education with special education major from Parker, Pennsylvania (Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School)
  • Jessica Costolo, senior early childhood education with special education major from Hopwood, Pennsylvania (Laurel Highlands Senior High School)
  • Kayla Coughlin, junior early childhood education with special education major from Buena Park, California (Home School Clearing House)
